Navigating as a Subject

I feel as though I have been hit over the head. I never thought to go through and teach the kids how to navigate on the Internet. I have always told the kiddos where they can go to search the Net. However, I have never thought to go through the strategies for navigation or to point out all of the particulars of a website. I need to sit and make a list of all of the things I do when I search the Internet without even thinking about it. Things as simple as the ending to the URL that tell you about the website are things I look at, but never thought to point out to my students. I also like the idea of the Internet Driver's License so that we can see if our students "have the basics" before sending them out. However, the test that is online is a bit too simplistic for my students. It asks great questions, but the multiple choice aspect always has an obvious answer. If the students do not read the whole question and all options, they can easily get the questions correct without knowing the correct solution. What do you think about it??

  • Maybe you can use the idea of a scavanger hunt with them to help them learn what's right or wrong. That way they can see what one looks like and eventually they can create their own. Maybe even tying it into the same topic but allowing them to discover the web sites and links. Then you can still print out a license for them to mark their success. I agree with teaching them the how and why of navigating. I know when my kids have a chance to "play" on the computers in Tech Ed class, they all go to wrestling web sites or to gaming sites. There is no productivness (is that even a word? ha ha) to it.

  • That's a great idea Betty! I never thought about using the scavenger hunt for something like that. I just might do that with my kiddos! Thanks! :-)

  • Julie said- I agree with the fact that this is all very overwhelming, specifically the amount of aspects involved with New Literacies and what is necessary for students to learn when using the Internet. WHen I taught, students used many of the software programs during comp lab time, I eventually got over the fact that I didn't know how to use each one & learned by watching students. When we did research using the Internet our tech person would bookmark sites for students to use- I thought that's all they need. I did not realize (sounds kind or stupid...but??) that they needed instruction of how to navigate the sites and strategies about selecting info. I do feel a bit more knowledgable and have a better hanlde on what would be needed. Have either you or Betty tried out any of these things in your classrooms yet? Julie
